Meet Camy:


When Angie first asked me to blog about my character’s brokenness, I immediately thought, “What brokenness?”

Trish is a complete and utter ditz. She leaps into life without thinking and assumes someone’s going to be there to catch her. She runs full steam ahead to accomplish her goals with a rather dingy understanding of what she’s doing.

But Trish was modeled after me—my own struggles with singleness, my desire to regain my chastity.

And I realized that Trish—like me—truly is broken. She even understands the depths of her brokenness—her lost chastity, her lost focus on God. She’s trying to fix herself on her own, but she is definitely aware of what’s wrong with her.

Trish has what I didn’t when I was a young, single Christian woman—she has clear eyes to see who she is, and who she isn’t. She’s clearly aware of her faults, and she accepts herself despite the things she knows she can’t do, despite the talents and faith she knows she doesn’t have—yet. She’s clear-eyed and hopeful at the same time.

I wrote Trish to be who I wished I could have been. My identity had been so caught up in my singleness, my purity (or rather lack of it), my chastity (which I despaired I ever regain), my sense of belonging (where did I fit in?).

I didn’t realize that none of that mattered as long as Jesus loved me, as long as I could accept His love and who He made me.

Trish’s childlike enthusiasm infects the people around her. Despite her own brokenness, she uses the talents she does have—her joie de vivre, her spunk and determination—to try to do what she feels God would want her to do.

She doesn’t do anything perfectly, and she doesn’t have to—God always uses our efforts, no matter how paltry, to accomplish His will. Sometimes, the worse my efforts, the more He uses them (which I totally don’t get, but I’m not complaining).

Are you aware of your own brokenness? Do you see clearly?

Can you use your strengths to minister to others despite who or what you are? One of my favorite worship songs is “Uncommon Love” by Christa Black and Otto Price. There’s a line from the chorus that always impacts me:

Forgetting all I’ve said, Forgiving where I’ve been, You offer your uncommon love.

He doesn’t care—He just wants to use us. Like Trish, we can let Him.
